A Persian fish design “Mahi” Tabriz rug. The tight circles in the pattern of this rug would have been extremely difficult to weave because rugs are woven row by row. Only a weaver of exceptional skill would have been capable of producing a rug with such a compact and detailed design. The rug has beautiful colours and abrash (colour variation) that is characteristic of rugs that were dyed with organic plant dyes. The all-over Mahi design is punctuated perfectly by the rug’s rich, blue border.
Situated in northwestern Iran, Tabriz is the fourth largest city in the country. Tabriz rugs are known for their high knot count, tight weaving technique and soft wool.
This rug is in excellent condition with even wear consistent with age and low pile.
